CONDITIONS

Wingstem does well in very moist soil and can be found on creekbanks where the trees break into a motteld shade. IN the garden, make sure this tall plant has room to reach its tall height of 7-8 feet. Can be used as a privacy cover around fences. Each plant should be placed 18-24” inches apart and given partial shade or partial sun. Can be adaptive of full shade.

BENEFITS

During the summer and fall season, this plant creates a dense wall of bright yellow flowers with bright green florets similar to a pincushion and a fresh smell. These flowers last into October, creating a nice landscape for Fall, alongside its sister plant Purple Ironweed. Wingstem also dries into attractive sculpturesque forms wtih branching stems and pincushions of the remaining florets. During freezing temperatures, the long stalks often become the site of frostflowers, or formations of ice extruded from stems into beautiful patterns resembling flowers.

CARE

These perennial flowers grow quite large and can be used for borders and for privacy. They should be planted in moist, acidic soil and tolerate full to partial shade. It would be helpful to add more rich soil around the hole you dig to plant the wingstem to make sure theres enough nutrients for it to establish its roots in your chosen location. Make sure to water the day of and following days and even weeks after planting and continue watering if they are planted into a dryer soil to keep your wingstems from drying out.

This plant pairs well with ironweed, swamp rose and mistflower
