Swamp Rose (Rosa Palustris) is a native shrub that grows 6 to 8 feet and thrives in moist rich and acidic soil. It is in the rose family and hosts pink blossoms May through August
Especially valuable to birds and bumblebees, the swamp rose spreads aggressively and tolerates shade to partial sun to full sun.
CONDITIONS
Rosa Palustris is truly a swamp plant that does well in very moist soil. In fall hey should be placed 1-3 feet apart and given partial to full sun.
This milkweed does well in pool dry soils that are nuetral to slightly acidic such as rocky or sandy forests such as pinelands.
BENEFITS
In summer the large pink flowers are fragrant and overtake the bush. In fall the bush has attractive foliage and large showy rosehips which are foraging for many birds. These rosehips are tart like a berry and contain hih quantities of vitamin C. They can be eaten raw or preserved into jellies, jam, tea and other recipes. The blooms are also edible and have anticancer antioxidant properties.
CARE
These perennial bushes grow quite large and can be used for borders and for privacy. They should be planted in moist, preferably nutrient rich, acidic soil and tolerate sitting water. The swamp rose does best where it recieves a fair but of sun, but also tolerates shade.
